Where to start! Mica Levi has been dancing to the beat of her own drum since she started making music. Just 32 years old and already an international star composer and producer, Levi is also the lead singer of the experimental pop group Micachu and the Shapes. After four years studying at the Guildhall College Of Music and Drama, Levi launched into the world of film scoring creating an incredibly original score for Jonathan Glazer’s debut film Under the Skin. Both her score for Under the Skin and her later work on Pablo Larraín’s Jackie won her BAFTA nominations and an Oscar nomination. Fast becoming one of the most original and sought-after film composers out there, if you don’t yet know her music I highly recommend you make its acquaintance!

Now you can begin working on the next step in your journey towards building a sustainable fan base away from your hometown – figuring out how to maintain this following when it might be a little while before you can come play live for them again.

This holiday season, consider giving the gift of positive support in the form of a donation to one of these ten important music-related community charities.

Let’s start out with what a narrative is not. Your narrative is not necessarily the same thing as your biography. It is not a list of facts about your music education, when your band formed, and what awards you’ve received. And it’s not something that just lives on the bio page of your website.

It’s often the case that in concert and in these symphonic works designed to highlight the theremin, we’re really able to hear its full range and expressive potential. So we’ve picked out five pieces from modern 20th century composers (some of which were written to accompany film) that have helped define the use of this instrument in a variety of capacities.

In addition to playing the built-in instruments, you can also use the aQWERTYon as a MIDI controller for any DAW or notation program. Just set the input to the IAC bus (Windows users will need to install MidiOX before this will work.)

I love this quote because it reminds me that it does not matter how old you are. Throughout my 365-day RV tour of the USA, I’ve played to crowds from ages 1-99 and played with musicians ages 18-91 (literally, I played a show with a 91-year old vibraphone player, Harry Sheppard, in Houston, Texas). It’s so, so wonderful how music can cross these types of boundaries. It’s easy to get caught up in ageism with social media and the pop charts showing younger demographics, but remember: There are people out here of all ages, shapes, and sizes creating and sharing their music. And it’s never too late to pick up that guitar and start singing.

One of this blog’s most prominent features is the “10 Songs You Need To Hear This Week” which features everyone from YAWNS to Lil Lotus, Cold Hart, Yung Scuff, and more — always aiming to highlight underground artists. Underground Underdogs also does artist features and introspective pieces like “An Insight Into the Experimental Sounds of Cremation Lily” or interviews with artists about their story and success. If you’re a big enough fan you can grab a t-shirt or hoodie and support them.

Most importantly: Have fun with it. The chances are you won’t have any huge sponsors in the early stages of a podcast, so use those opening episodes to fine-tune your process and overall sound. Having professional, clean sounding audio will make the difference between listeners taking you seriously and not.

The addition of the F# in the Melodic Minor scale, makes things slightly more complex (if that was even needed at this point!). This time, we would have to work out the names comparing the scales to their most similar mode. For example, there is little point in comparing the fourth mode built on A Melodic Minor scale to an Ionian scale. It is much more similar to a Lydian mode, since it comprises of the note F#. The G# at this point, makes it a C Lydian (Augmented fifth).

Personally, I’ll be going with C major, because of two small details. First, the song ends on a C chord, which gives us a clue as to how the writer hears the song. Next, Halsey is singing “blue notes” from the C blues scale, which is something you can trust. But because the melody notes and loop notes make an A minor chord in first inversion, you could also hear that as an Am chord, and so an A minor tonality.

The Major Scale (also known as the Ionian Mode) is really common and often used as the scale all others are defined against. It’s the “Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do” of solfege fame. On the piano, the major scale is represented by playing all the white keys between C and C, as shown below. Go ahead and play it; you’ll immediately recognize it.
